Season's greetings – In September?

By Helen Darbin

Since when did Christmas start in September? Last time I looked at my calendar it was still the end of December, but shops are already revving up even though there are still three months to go.
The Jubilee and Olympics are well and truly over now - so it's time to get us in the mood for the next celebration – aka commercial opportunity.
If you want Slade to wish you a "Merry Christmas" just pop into my local garden centre. Their Christmas Grotto has been up and running from September 1st – and yes it is grotty.
And a pub up the road has been taking Christmas bookings since July. I don't even know what is happening next week let alone in four months’ time.
Don't get me wrong I love Christmas - the kitsch decorations, the Salvation Army brass bands and the children's nativity – you can always guarantee a fist fight between the shepherds. I even love sprouts.
But please not just yet. Couldn't there be a ban on any tinsel until after Bonfire Night?
Bah humbug
